The Hand County Highway Department is seeking applicants for a seasonal equipment operator / general laborer.

  • Starting pay is $14 per hour. Sliding pay scale depending on length of employment.
  • Work up to or slightly over 40 hours per week.
    • No benefits while seasonal.
    • Does provide workers compensation as required by law.
    • No paid leave or holiday pay.
  • Four day work week (7a to 5:30 pm) / off on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be 18 years or older.
  • Must have or be able to acquire a commercial driver license for continued employment.
  • May work into a full time position for the right applicant.
  • Must be able to work in hot or cold, dusty and dirty environments, exposure to chemicals and petroleum products.
  • Must be able to lift 60 pounds unattended and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Subject to a back ground check (additional information may be needed post-hire).
  • Must complete the forms found below in “Employee Forms”.

The Hand County Highway Department is supervised by Jeff Hargens.  Specific questions can be directed to the highway department by calling 605-853-3292 Monday through Thursday from 9a to 4p.  The office is closed Friday-Sunday.

The employees of the highway department work in the country and will generally eat their lunch while on the road.  Access to towns is often limited and applicants should aware of this ahead of time.  Employees of the highway department can be exposed to harsh environments, prolonged standing or sitting, lifting and stretching.  Employees should be physically capable of performing all required employment tasks.

Examples of work performed:

  • Operating vehicles from pickups, tandem axle trucks, loaders, road graders, power brooms, payment rollers, tractors.
  • Sweeping, shoveling, raking, digging building materials, dirt, asphalt, gravel, sand, and debris.
  • Record keeping.  Notes on projects, time cards, projects cards, and inventory / equipment used.
  • Directing traffic, setting of cones, barricades, flags, signs or other traffic control devices.
  • Working in all weather conditions, any time of year, any hour of the day.
  • Working in noisy environments for random periods of time.
  • Use of two way radios for coordination or equipment and manpower.
  • Cleaning of equipment interiors, exteriors, buildings and grounds, shop and office areas.
  • Light mechanical work on engines, hydraulics, drive trains, plows, attachments, electronics.
  • Light building trades involving construction of small structures, bracing, fencing, barricades, or other items made of wood or metal.
  • Working cooperatively under employees with more experience, recognizing seniority and longevity.
  • Problem solving.  Recognizing problems before they happen, developing solutions and alternatives indepnedantly or in teams.
